Last month, Jeff put up a post on Red Brick Pizza and how he was happy that the chain restaurant’s margherita pizza didn’t taste like basil-covered cardboard.
I was glad to see him write about this restaurant, too, as I’ve long been curious, but have never stopped in for a bite.
On that advice, I stopped by Red Brick Pizza in Irvine’s Quail Hill Village Center for lunch on Monday. I planned on pizza, but then the food blogger in me kicked in and I just had to order a fire-roasted Fhazani sandwich.
I chose the Prosciutto Milano ($8) with mozzarella, salami, prosciutto, red onions, arugula, red sauce, fresh chilled greens and Italian dressing - hold the peperoncinis. The sandwich is made on the crisp-but-chewy dough that Jeff really liked.
I was hoping for a super sammy, but what I got was a kinda-calzone that didn’t know if it was a sandwich or a salad. They shoved the sandwich full of bagged salad mix and cucumbers (?), two pieces of salami on each half and a couple of shreds of dried-out prosciutto. I’m not sure if there was any kind of red sauce on this thing either.
The only enjoyable part of this lunch was the crust, and the cheese that was fire-roasted into it. And wouldn’t you know it, add a little “red sauce” and you’ve got pizza.
I should have known all along. There’s obviously a reason this joint’s called Red Brick Pizza … and not Red Brick Fhazani.

Don’t be shy now, Niraz. What did you really think?
Sounds like a salad sandwich to me. Probably cheaper to just order two slices of pizza and a side salad.
Good call. I don’t really agree with Jeff. This place is average at best.
