A Slice of New York in Seal Beach

A reader awhile aback suggested I try A Slice of New York Pizza in Seal Beach. As my eating luck would have it, I had just wolfed down a gigantic salami sandwich from Angelo’s Deli across the street (which I’ll be blogging shortly) when I noticed the pizza joint and groaned. I stood outside for a minute, debating whether I could handle a second lunch.

Kat’s brain: “Oh, you have to try a slice there.”
Kat’s stomach: “Jesus, why do you do this to us, why?”
Kat’s brain: “C’mon champ, it’s just one slice. You’re already here in Seal Beach, when are you going to come back next?”
Kat’s stomach: “Fine, fine. But you do realize that you’re going to make us sick again! Did you have to wear skinny jeans today, too?”

As I walked in and saw the deli case full of assorted by-the-slice selections, I thought for a second I would find a broccoli-topped pie — just like in NY, but alas, I did not. So I ordered just a plain ol’ slice of pepperoni and it was thrown into the stone oven. The slice set me back $2.79.

It was pretty greasy, just a tad more than other pizza slices I’ve had — globules of red-tinged oil floated atop the slice and I had to resist the urge to press a napkin into it the way I would in high school. I liked the paper-thin crust but it wasn’t as crisp as I was hoping — soft from the tip to the middle and a bit crisper toward the back of the crust. I think I prefer the pie over at Al’s New York Cafe in Costa Mesa, still. Or maybe the guy took my slice out of the oven a bit too soon?

Hi Kat, haha…my organs have those conversations all the time! Especially this month! Oooh, pizza sounds so good right now. I think that’ll be the first thing I eat after my ramen binge. I grew up eating Haus of Pizza in Costa Mesa but haven’t been there in years. They used to have the best minestrone soup. I read your post from last year but have you been there recently?

  • Hi Keizo! Oh, is it the month of October that’s making me eat like I’ve got 10 stomachs??? ;) I have been to Haus of Pizza and it’s tasty but reminds me of a better version of Pizza Hut — thicker crust, lot more hearty than the thin-crust pies I usually stick to. Haven’t been in two years probably but will have to go try the soup you mentioned. I looooove minestrone, too!

So did your pants hurt after that? ;) (I’m the one who first mentioned this place in the Al’s post.)

Sorry to hear about your experience with the soft crust. My visits there have resulted in a crispier crust, though I tend to go more towards dinnertime, i.e., the oven’s hotter since it’s been on longer during the day, which would result in a crispier crust for the slices. If you ever go back, maybe mention the crisp crust preference to them - see what they can do for you.

Oh, and if you ever find yourself headed towards LAX, try Valentino’s in Manhattan Beach. You may even see Jay Leno there if it’s a Sunday afternoon!
