I hate rushed meals, but I had 20 minutes before a doctor’s appointment at CHOC today (allergy testing, woo-hoo) in Orange and definitely needed to grab a quick bite. Right before I thought I had to settle for a run-of-the-mill Philly-style cheesesteak sandwich or worse, Carl’s Jr. , I spotted Greek Garden Grill across the street.
The fast-casual eatery has only been open about four months and serves the usual Greek basics like gyros, souvlaki and mousaka. Starters included: Melitzanosalata (ha, say that three times fast — roasted eggplant with pita wedges - $5); spanakopita (a savory phyllo dough pastry with spinach and feta -$5); and dolmades (grape leaves stuffed with rice and ground beef - $6).
There were plenty of sample plates at the front of the restaurant that looked tempting — like the beef-stuffed cabbage rolls, grilled salmon and stuffed tomatoes and bell pepper — but I just didn’t have time. So a chicken gyro it was. With a side of roasted lemon potatoes. The chicken gyro ($7) came with heaps of white meat chicken but it was a bit rubbery and bland. The tzatziki or cucumber and yogurt dill sauce helped to boost that a bit, with some red onions and diced tomatoes. The roasted potatoes ($2.50) packed a nice punch of citrus flavor and buttery goodness. I’d definitely get that again.

I was wondering how that place was, that suite used to be Main Street Pizza, which was ok, but never that great. If you are ever in that area again, don’t forget that Hollingshead is right there as well!
Dan,
Ah, perfect. Good to know re: Hollingshead being in that same plaza. Looks like I’ll be there in 3 weeks since I’ve got a followup doctor’s appt. then, ha!
I was a big fan of Main Street Pizza and was crushed that it closed (the owner went on to open–bizarrely–a barber shop). The two times I visited Greek Garden Grill were disappointments, and I’m not motivated to go again based on my experience.
Gustavo,
True, very generic Greek fast food. A-ha, I just put my finger on the way the chicken gyro tasted there. The meat was almost exactly like the stuff that comes from the Louis Rich pre-cooked chicken strips you get at the supermarket!!! I think all the hospital workers are stoked that it’s there though — I’m sure they’re sick of Carl’s, Charley’s Steakery, Duke’s and whatever other fast-food joints are in the immediate area, ha.
I still cry a little inside when I think about the loss of Main Street Pizza…
