The only thing that makes me happier than drinking mimosas with good friends on a sunny Sunday morning is throwing a breakfast burrito into the mix.
Thanks to Riley’s on 2nd Street in Belmont Shore, I had a got to experience such a dreamy day.
Let me start by saying that Riley’s isn’t known for their breakfast burritos at all. And I can see why. The burrito wasn’t terrible or anything, but it wasn’t outstanding, either. Neither was the price ($6.50). (They made up for it a little by throwing in my side of sour cream for free.)
Tortilla unfolded after the first bite, dumping eggs, cheese, too-dry chorizo and potato chunks all over my plate. Plus, the ingredients weren’t blended into well-balanced bites. I only ate half, so I guess the place gets credit for helping me learn restraint.
Still, I decided to include them in the search for the best burrito based on the ambiance alone. You can’t beat sitting in the sun, sipping mimosas that come from an oversized bottle of bubbly at only $12 a bottle. There’s something incredibly extravagant about drinking champagne while trying to heave a mound of greasy burrito goodness into your mouth. I’m a huge fan.
Plus, we got to spend the afternoon sitting at the outdoor patio admiring all the cute dogs being walked by.
By the end of the meal, the champagne had prompted a hazy philosophical conversation about what makes a breakfast burrito excel, which spiraled into a conversation about boys. So yeah, I won’t go there.
Instead, I’ll show you what you’ll be getting if you order one of these. Don’t know if you can tell from the picture, but they use salsa with chunks of tomato in here. I liked that twist. Most of my favorites come with straight up hot sauce:

And here’s the spillage that could occur. I swear, this happened on the first couple bites — not after too much champagne.

Great blogs, just read the 5 burrito stories, and thought I would suggest Rose Donuts in Corona Del Mar. Great breakfast burritos (as well as an awesome club sandwich). Grab an iced coffee or latte, a burrito , maybe a fresh donut, and sit outside and enjoy. I just made myself hungry typing, so I am on my way there now….
Breakfast burritos at a donut shop?! I’m so in! Thanks for the suggestion Toby. I’ll report back, soon!
I would suggest Pipes down in San Clemente. My mouth is already watering just thinking of their breakfast burritos with a hint of salt air.
My favorite breakfast burrito comes from Los Alazanes in Anaheim. The one with everything.
