OC gets yet another cupcakery with the opening of SusieCakes in Newport Beach this week. So how is this shiny new joint different from all the other cupcake shops sprouting up?
Frosting-filled cupcakes. Yep, a shot of frosting is injected into every cupcake. The bright shop is nice and spacious with an appealing retro decor: Walls are painted a pretty shade of pale robin’s egg blue and I especially dig the white, pressed metal ceiling.
There are nine daily flavors to choose from: Chocolate, Coconut, Lemon, Mocha, Strawberry, Peanut Butter, Red Velvet and Chocolate Mint. Cupcakes are $3 a pop. Ellyn and I just about grabbed one of each …
My favorite of the bunch was just the plain ol’ vanilla with a pastel blue frosting. Simple, homemade tasting and very moist.
In addition to the daily selections, SusieCakes also has special seasonal flavors, like this Peanut Butter & Jelly. It tasted, well, exactly like PB&J. The only nit was that the PB frosting and jelly made for a very goopy cupcake that fell apart and was messy to eat.
Ellyn loved her chocolate mint cupcake but could barely finish it (plus one bite of the Red Velvet) before declaring sugar overload. Pansy! Now, about that Red Velvet … I wasn’t a fan. I felt the frosting was too heavy with the cream-cheese flavor and a bit too gel-like. But for anyone who really loves that cream-cheese flavor, you’ll probably love it. The red velvet was a vivid scarlet hue and it tasted OK, again, very moist. I liked that there are a few small tables so that you can actually sit down to enjoy your baked goods instead of having to take it to go. Overall, I liked the cupcakes at SusieCakes, but wasn’t wowed. And even though Dolcissimo’s (across town) cupcakes can be dry, I still love the flavors and frosting there more and I’d probably go to Dolcissimo or Five Sweets for my cupcake fix.
Of course, SusieCakes is actually much more than cupcakes. They have specialty layer cakes that you can purchase by the slice, too: Red Velvet, Carrot, German Chocolate, Coconut, Marble Cake (this one looked really delicious, will have to try next time), and a good ol’ Fudge cake. Six-inch cakes start at $30, 9-inch cakes are $40-$50 and slices for $5. There’s pies, puddings and cheesecakes, too. Something I definitely want to try is the seasonal key lime pie they’ve got right now.

My goodness … and it’s a couple doors down from Kean Coffee, too! Guess I know what I’m washing down my cupcake with.
The PB&J is awesome…otherwise they’re okay. I like a huge sugar rush and these cakes are number one for that.
my family had a dinner party last weekend and our deserts were from SusieCakes. The Key Lime pie was amazing! Light and airy with a homemade graham cracker crust. The Fudge cake was delicious too! Very moist…not dense & and dry.
My wife and I picked up a cupcake each yesterday after seeing your post. She got the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and I got the red velvet. They were delicious! I could probably eat one of those a day and never get tired of it…
heaven! just heaven!

I just went to sweet lorraines at the spectrum and its a thumbs down on the red velvet ! The frosting is not as good as even a canned frosting, the cake is way too crumbly and flavorless. I would have to agree that my homemade ones are much much better (especially at $3.25 a pop)
