I’m not a fiend for the tart frozen yogurt like some folks I know — the novelty sort of wore off for me awhile ago. That’s why I didn’t flock to Swirls in Costa Mesa when it first opened in February — even though it’s just a minute drive away from my house. But when I heard from a Yelper that Swirls was offering frogurt and “fusion” crepes, it was enough to finally lure me in. I’m a sucker for crepes.
By the way, how much do you love that Swirls opened up in the former space occupied by ConRev? Actually, the bright shop is one of the nicer Pinkberry-knockoffs I’ve seen in awhile, with white tables and colorful chairs. (The owner is a former employee of Kiwiberri, we’re told.) The menu is actually projected off a flatscreen TV, pretty cool. While everyone in my group opted for frozen yogurt with fruit toppings, I ordered the fusion crepe with Nutella, plain tart yogurt and fresh strawberries and raspberries ($5 for three toppings or $6.45 for three toppings plus frozen yogurt). This was gonna be interesting …
… as it turns out, I wound up scooping out much of my froyo, the tang/tartness did not go well with the chocolate hazelnut goodness that is Nutella, not to mention the warm crepe. And even without the Nutella, I’m not convinced frozen yogurt belongs in a crepe. And as you see in the first picture, it wound up looking more like a bouquet.
I should mention that I really enjoyed my buddy’s blueberry frogurt — it was creamy, but not overly tart or too sweet. Other flavors include: Green Tea and Mango Passion Fruit. Prices are right up there with other frozen yogurt joints, $4 for a small with 3 toppings. There’s also shaved ice, too, for around $5 a pop.
