Art Institute Chef Instructor Rick Royal and a team of 60 students and alumni were busy at work on Thursday evening, on a project that’s sure to wow the crowds at the Celebrity Food Show this weekend. These overachievers are assembling a 12-foot tall chocolate tree, complete with more than 300 marzipan oranges (pictured above) and 10,000 chocolate leaves. The tree is a tribute to the 150th anniversary of Anaheim’s existence.

Chef Rick Royal pipes green icing leaves onto the chocolate trunk of the tree.

By 9 p.m. Thursday night, the fragrant construction site looked like a war zone: Racks and boxes of the oranges and leaves were strewn about, and everywhere you looked were gadgets and tools needed to complete the project.

I’m excited for these students to finish and when I visit the show on Saturday, I’ll be sure to stop by the Art Institute’s booth to view the full, completed spectacle. I’ll post a photo over the weekend of the completed tree.

Aside from this chocolate and marzipan spectacle, there’s plenty of other booths and shows to watch this weekend. The Celebrity Food Show takes place at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel, and runs from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.  today through Sunday.

Food Network chefs Sara Moulton (”Sara’s Secrets”), Warren Brown (”Sugar Rush”), Bobby and Jamie Deen (”Road Tasted”) and other celebrity chefs will give daily cooking demonstrations on a massive, 850-seat stage, while food and wine booths will be open all day, offering nibbles and samples of their products. Borders bookstores will host a Celebrity Cookbook Station where authors will sign their books (Of these authors, Register Food Editor Cathy Thomas is scheduled to appear).

The food show is also home to the largest food competition in the country, America’s Best Professional Competition. Wine tastings are also available from noon to 7 p.m. all weekend long. The general admission ticket price includes one celebrity cooking demonstration as well as access to the wine-tasting pavilion and exhibit all floor.

Information: The Celebrity Food Show is at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel, 700 W. Convention Way, Anaheim. Tickets are from $25 to $40 and can be purchased at the door. Visit http://www.celebrityfoodshow.com  for more information.
