We were in the middle of Red Square deep into a Russian night when somebody mentioned Zankou Chicken. Having been out of the country for almost three weeks, we were talking about what we missed most about home. From that second on, all I could think about was shawerma, rotisserie chicken and tarna (chicken shawerma). I could practically taste cumin, garlic, nutty tahini sauce, cold tomatoes and fiery peppers. I could almost feel soft pita bread in my hand scooping up a big dollop of hummous.
Within 48 hours of returning home, I was in Anaheim placing my order and pleased to see that the sparse chain of restaurants is finally accepting credit cards. I left with three big bags of food. I don’t think there was a meal more enjoyed in all of Southern California that night.

What is so great about Zankou Chicken? El Pollo Loco chicken has more flavor. Zankou is so ordinary.
