Onotria in Costa Mesa

For those in hibernation after the closing of Scampi in Costa Mesa, it’s time to wash up and look alive because Massimo Navaretta’s new restaurant, Onotria, is open. It opened Wednesday and is serving ragout of wild venison with curry, pheasant with muscato, fresh pastas, fresh porcinis, just to name a few dishes and ingredients.

“Onotria has less to do with Italy and more to do with me,” said Navaretta today over the phone. The menu, he says, will reflect the seasons. “I love a trend like everyone else, but when it comes to food, I want to know if it’s February or if it’s summer.”

Just like it was at Scampi, Onotria takes wine seriously. (The name means land of wines.) Wine and food pairing will play a large role in service.

Onotria, 2831 Bristol Street, Costa Mesa. (714) 641-5952.

  • Fantastic wines and excellent food… Ask Massimo to explain the wines to you, it’s a treat. One of the best restaurants in the world.

  • Edward says:

I had high expectations going in, but was very disappointed. I had the Wild Boar Chop, and it was very dry. My wife had the Crepes of Spinach, and the spinach looked very messy and torn. Not a good presentation. The server we had was rude, almost to the point of being mean spirited. I will not go back.
